Roundstone

Roundstone is one of Ireland’s most beautiful and unspoilt villages, situated on the west coast of Ireland amid the ruggedness of Connemara. Roundstone village was built in the 1820s by renowned Scottish engineer Alexander Nimmo and in its day was a busy little harbour, where local fishermen returned with the days catches of lobster, crayfish, crab and mackerel.

Initially, the majority of visitors ensured Roundstone was a haven for botanists, fishermen and artists. Nowadays you are just as likely to find hill-walkers, cyclists, windsurfers, kite-surfers and music-lovers wandering about the place. There is a thriving Crafts Centre where musical instruments and pottery are created.

Two of the most stunning and unspoilt beaches, Dog’s Bay and Gurteen, are located only 2km from Roundstone.

Errisbeg Hill, at a height of almost 1,000 feet offers stunning views across Connemara and the nearby Twelve Bens Mountain Range. On clear days, the Aran Islands and Kerry Mountains are also visible from its summit!

But perhaps that, which attracts so many visitors to Roundstone over and over again, is something completely intangible…the craic. Spend a while here and get to know some of the locals and visitors alike and you’ll begin to understand the meaning of this unique, elusive, yet much sought-after Irish quality!
